The smell of rubber is owing to organic compounds of nitrogen and sulfur used as antioxidants and antiozonants.

Gyms are usually floored with hard wood, stained and varnished. They shouldn’t have a smell.

The gymnasium was originally to be named in honor of Tazewell Taylor. A commitment had been received from Taylorâs family to fund a refurbishing of the chapel in the Wren Building, but when building priorities were changed making the construction of a gymnasium the priority, College officials understood this was agreeable to the Taylor family. Yet, a July 13, 1899 letter from Robert M. Hughes, a member of the Board of Visitors, to President Tyler included here explains that the change was not agreeable to Mrs. Taylor who believed athletics in colleges were âoverdone.â Hughes shared his idea with Tyler to get around Mrs. Taylorâs objection and ensure the College did not lose the Taylor gift or any other pledges: renovate the chapel in the Wren Building to include a gym on the second floor. Hughes was determined to explore the idea, continuing to meet with Mrs. Taylor to secure her gift to support the chapel and gym project and going so far as to consult with an architect. President Tyler was less optimistic about the possibility of adding an addition above the chapel as seen in his July 17, 1899 letter and the idea for a second floor gym was eventually put aside.
