If you are on the second story and not slab on grade, then i would recommend a crack suppression membrane before you install your slate. Laticrete international makes a crack suppression membrane that will absorb any type of movement in the building and will prevent any type of cracking or bond separation in your stone.Below I have attached a link to laticrete.com for you to read up on Laticrete Blue 92 crack suppression membrane. This is the product I would recommend to you. You can purchase this product at just about any type of flooring distributors location. You can also purchase this at Dal Tile. After you apply this product, I would purchase laticrete 254 thin-set and set your slate in their product as well. If you use only Laticrete products in your installation, you will have their 10 year warranty. I use Laticrete products every chance i get. They are not the cheapest, but they are the easiest products to work with. I installed a bar room floor not to long ago in a basement slab on grade. Look at my site for the photos.www.backsplashandfloors.com and visit laticrete to read up on their product http://www.laticrete.com/architects/products/anti-fracture_crack_supression.aspx
